You love the cream. You love the results. But every morning, you wrestle with the lid. You try a towel, change hands and briefly consider calling for backup. All before your first coffee.
Packaging may catch someone’s eye in the shop, but its real test starts at home.
Slippery hands, stubborn lids
Bathrooms aren’t showrooms. Hands are often wet or covered in moisturiser, making smooth containers difficult to grip and tight lids frustrating to open.
Shape, texture and closure design can make a difference. Customers should enjoy their skincare routine without a grip strength workout.
Getting to the last little bit
You can see the last bit of cream, but reaching it requires a very small spoon.
A container’s opening, depth and internal shape affect access to the product. A thick body butter and a lightweight lotion have different needs, so packaging should suit both the formulation and how it will be used.
Put it to the test
Before choosing a design, try it as your customer would. Pick it up with damp hands, open it, access the product and close it again. Can you grip it comfortably? Does the lid go back on easily? What happens when it’s nearly empty?
Let others try a sample too. Their experience can reveal what a product photograph won’t.
Packaging that earns its place
At Medena, we help brands develop plastic packaging for cosmetic, pharmaceutical and medical products, with design and engineering support through Stanton Global.
Planning a new range or improving an existing container? Start with one question: Would it pass the bathroom shelf test?
Because the best part of a morning routine should be using the product, not fighting to open it.
